Hideaway Harbor
Hideaway Harbor is a 3D environment I am building based off of an existing city block in Tacoma, Washington. Hideaway Harbor reenvisions this city block in the future. Taking inspiration from Ready Player One, the buildings in Hideaway Harbor are topped with stacked structures that hold shipping containers, RVs, and mobile homes. The ambiance of the environment relies heavily on the red and blue tones that are emitted from lots of neon signage throughout the scene.
Ideation
Before creating any models for this project, I focused on gathering inspiration and conducting research. I created a mood board that aggregated the different styles and tones I wanted to convey in the environemnt. The lighting would consist mostly of red and blue tones coming from LEDs in the scene. I was picturing a foggy, wet environment where these lights would reflect off of the ground surfaces. I found an existing diner in Tacoma, WA that I wanted to build the environment around. My environment would have a handful of base buildings topped with tall stacks populated with shipping containers, RVs, and mobile homes, which would all be covered in bright graffiti.
Graffiti
I also conducted a graffiti case study during this project. I chose to texture the models I would create with my own graffiti tags. Since graffiti can vary between locations, and my environment is set in Tacoma, I did some research on what the graffiti looks like in the greater Seattle area. I found that most of the graffiti consisted of small, quick tags, but that there were still some larger, more artistic pieces in areas as well. I drew inspiration from this research to come up with designs for 48 of my own graffiti tags. Then I used Adobe Substance painter to create several textures with the graffiti for a shipping container I modeled. The 3D models I built for this project included a diner, a starbucks, and an arcade. For each of these three buildings, I built a different structure for the stack that sits on top of the building. These stack structures are populated with shipping containers, RVs, and mobile homes that I also modeled myself. All of my models were textures using Adobe Substance Painter.
