Green Goblin
After watching the film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, I left the theater in awe by the cinematography of one specific scene. The scene starts by panning around a corner into an alley. The audience sees the Green Goblin’s mask hanging from the corner of a dumpster staring right at them. Then, we see Harry Osborn as he tries to hide his glider under the trash. The camera turns back to the mask, and the next shot shows a straight-on view of the mask in the center of the screen while we hear “Green Goblin’s” voice calling Harry a coward. We watch Harry and the mask have a conversation until Harry smashes it on the ground.
I think this scene stuck with me because this inanimate object was given a personality, as if the Green Goblin was not a person, but the mask itself was the root of all evil. I was inspired. So, when I got home from the movie that night, I decided I wanted to recreate the scene.
The difficult part of this project was that this movie was only playing in theaters. I could not put the movie on pause as I modeled, and there were no clips or images on the internet that I could use as reference. I modeled the whole scene as I remembered it, and added objects as I saw fit. She pieces of glass and the trash spilled out on the ground were additions of my own, and the details I was able to model into the cans, the lid of the cup, and the water bottles are my favorite part of the whole piece.
The entire scene was modeled in Maya and rendered using Arnold renderer. I modeled all the objects in the scene, placed all the materials, which are all aiStandard Surfaces, and strategically placed lights to bring attention to the center of the piece, the Green Goblin mask. I changed the properties of the Arnold Physical Sky to determine how the shadows in the scene were cast. Each still image was rendered from a separate camera.
